Lesson 1: GETTING STARTED + VOCABULARY Subject: English 6; Class: 6A, 6B, 6C Time: 1 period I. OBJECTIVES: 1. Knowledge: + Vocabulary: Gain vocabulary items about countries & Nationalities (Canada, the USA, Argentina, Brazil, the UK, Greece, Russia, Vietnam, Spain, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canadian, British, Australian, South African, American, New Zealander, Brazilian, Vietnamese, Russian, Spanish, Egyptian, Greek, Turkish, Argentinean) + Grammar: use the questions – “Where is she / he from? Where are you from?” She / he’s from . - I’m from Viet Nam talk about countries and nationalities around the world + Skills: integrated Skill: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. 2. Competences: - General competences: + Raise motivations and interests in learning English as a foreign language. + Develop communicative and team-working skills through learning activities. + Illustrate problem-solving and critical-thinking skills through learning activities. - Specific competences: Developing intercultural communication skills through understanding countries around the world. 3. Quality: - Ss take part in the lesson actively and effectively. - Ss work hard, love countries and nationalities around the world. II. TEACHING AIDS AND LEARNING MATERIALS. 1. Teacher: Textbook, Laptop, Projector, ActivBoard... 2. Students: Textbook, notebook, studying tools III. PROCEDURE. 1/ Activity 1: WARM UP: (5’) a. Aims: HelpSs know which countries these flags belong to. b. Contents:Ss give some names of the countries base on the flags. c. Outcome: Students' answers (the names of the countries base on the flags) d. Organization: * Brainstorming:
 - T: Do you know which countries these flags belong to? - Watch a short animation about flags (Do you know their countries? Yes, I do) to brainstorm about the theme. - Teacher asks students to give some names of the countries base on the flags. T: What’s the name of the country? - Teacher shows more flags, Ss say out the countries - Canada - Spain - Brazil - - Teacher gives feedback, then links to the theme: nations and nationalities 2/ Activity 2: PRESENTATION VOCABUALRY (20’) a. Aims: Help ss to gain vocabulary items about countries &nationalities. b. Contents: Vocabularyrelated to the countries and nationalities. c. Outcome: Ss can memorize new words to talk about countries and nationalities around the world. d. Organization: * Pre - teach vocabulary. - T: Use real maps and pictures to introduce the new words: Countries (n) Nationalities Canada Canadian the USA / America American Argentina Argentinian Brazil Brazilian the UK / Britain British England English Greece Greek Russia Russian Vietnam Vietnamese Spain Spanish Egypt Egyptian South Africa South African Australia Australian New Zealand New Zealander Turkey Turkish - Have students listen to and repeat each new word. (individual) - Have students read all together (chorally). - Teacher corrects student’s pronunciation if necessary. * Checking vocabulary: Slap the board 3/ Activity 3: PRACTICE. * PRACTICE 1: Task 1, 2, 3, 4. a. Aims: Help Ss to gain the words about countries & nationalities and review the structure: “Where’s Ann from? – She’s from b. Contents: Words related to the countries and nationalities.
 - c. Outcome: Ss’ answers d. Organization: * TASK 1. Look at the map. Match the countries on the map to the nationalities (1/p.4): - Ask Ss to look at the map and match the countries on the map to the list of nationalities. - Check Ss’ answers around the class. * TASK 2: Look at exercise 1. Listen and repeat (2/p.5) To present vocabulary for countries and nationalities - Play the recording with pauses for Ss to repeat chorally and/or individually. - Check Ss’ pronunciation and intonation. * TASK 3: To act out dialogues and practice countries and nationalities (3/p.5). - Explain the task. - T helps Ss review the structure: “Where’s Ann from? –She’s from - Ask two Ss to play role and read the dialogue. - Ask Ss to work in pairs and act out similar dialogues for the people on the map. * TASK 4: Complete the sentences (4/p. 5) (personalize the topic) - Ask Ss to complete the sentences about themselves. - Elicit answer from Ss around the class. * * PRACTICE 2: READING (10’) a. Aims: Help ss to practice reading comprehension about friends around the world. b. Contents: Ss read the text to find out where is each person from and decide if the sentences are right or wrong. c. Outcome: Ss’ answers d. Organization: * TASK 1: Look at the pictures. Where is each person from? Listen and read to find out (1/p. 6) (listen and read for gist) - Ask Ss to look at the pictures and elicit Ss’ guesses as to where each person is from. - Teacher plays the recording. Ss listen, read and find out the answer. Answer Key Vicky is from Sydney, Australia. Jill is from Wellington, New Zealand. James is from Stittsville, Canada. Alicia is from Worcester, South Africa * TASK 2: Read the text. Answer R (right) or W (wrong) - (2/p. 6) - Give Ss time to read the text again and mark the statements according to what they read. - Check Ss’ answers. - Play the video for Ss and elicit their comments 4/ Activity 4: APPLICATION / SPEAKING (8’). a. Aims: Ss can complete the personal profiles, then choose a person and present him/her to the class. b. Contents: Ss complete the personal profiles, then talk about one of the profiles. c. Outcome: Student's profiles, Ss can present the personal profile in front of the class. d. Organization: - Allow Ss to have time to review the text and complete the personal profiles. - Check Ss’ answers on the board.
 - - Ask some Ss to choose a profile and present the person to the class. Suggested Answer Key Vicky is 11 years old. She is from Sydney, Australia. She is Australian. She can play basketball IV/ HOMEWORK (2’). a. Aims: Ss review the words about the countries and nationalities and practice the structure: “Where’s Annika from?- She’s from .” b. Contents: Ss do the tasks 1,2,3 on page 4 in workbook. c. Outcome: Ss’ answers. d.
